The SouthWest Organizing Project, in response to the current ban and the overall climate of fear and scapegoating of people of color in Arizona, is offering the book at a 50% discount to Arizona residents, and will give it for FREE to any Arizona Student who requests the book by sending a letter describing why they think the teaching of Chicano and Native American history accurately to young people is essential. Many Arizona students have already shown their disapproval of the ban, as hundreds walked out of class and marched on the Tuscon Unified School District’s headquarters earlier this week.
“CeCe McDonald, a black trans woman, has been facing 2nd degree murder charges since being attacked last summer by a group of white adults. CeCe and several friends, all black, were walking to the grocery store on June 5th, 2011 when white adults standing in the patio area of a South Minneapolis bar started screaming racist and transphobic slurs at the youth. CeCe, who is only 23 years old, approached the group and replied that she and her friends would not tolerate hate speech. In response, one of the white women said “I’ll take you bitches on” and smashed her glass into CeCe’s face. The broken glass sliced all the way through CeCe’s cheek. A fight ensued between the adults and the young people after this initial attack and one of the attackers, Dean Schmitz, was fatally stabbed. As if it were not sufficiently tragic that a group of young people were subjected to such severe violence and that Dean Schmitz lost his life, police arriving at the scene arrested CeCe, denied her adequate medical treatment, interrogated her for hours, and placed her in solitary confinement. In the aftermath of being attacked, she was not treated with care, but launched into another nightmare. The only person arrested that night, she has since been charged with two counts of 2nd degree murder. Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman has the power to drop these charges, a choice he made in multiple other clear instances of self-defense this year, but he has not yet done so. CeCe’s story is a portrait of the United States Criminal Justice System. Her story is what is meant when we are told that transgender people, especially transgender women of color, experience disproportionate rates of police harassment, profiling, and abuse. She is living one of the stories rolled into statistics like: trans people are ten to fifteen times more likely to be incarcerated than cisgender (not transgender) people, or nearly half of African American transgender people have spent time in jail or prison. These statistics are the result of the all of the ways that transgender people, especially transgender people of color, are denied access to the resources and opportunities that we need to live healthy lives free of violence, discrimination, and oppression. Transgender people consistently experience high levels of harassment in school, extreme levels of unemployment due to discrimination and lack of education, denial of competent medical care, inability to change identification documents, and disproportionate violence and harassment. Nevertheless, for generations transgender people, especially transgender women of color, have been at the forefront of movements against police brutality, white supremacy, economic injustice, and for queer liberation and gender self-determination.”
Did he murder those two people? What did CC say to piss those adults off? Why would you approach people who are threatening you? It sucks when people heckle you but you don’t go up to them. they’re obviously looking for trouble.
First of all, sexyneptune, you’re misgendering CeCe. CeCe is a woman, so the proper pronoun in referring to CeCe is “she.”
Secondly, re-read the post. According to the post—and I italicized the key phrase for emphasis—CeCe “approached the group and replied that she and her friend would not tolerate hate speech.” The fact that CeCe stood up for herself and her friends was enough for the white people in question to get violent with her and her crew. Hell, I’ve calmly stood up for myself, and it pisses people off for the precise reason that I refused to allow them to throw their racist/sexist shit at me with impunity and with my silence. And, considering that I’m thinking CeCe was probably fed up with dealing with several years of that—if she decided to say something in response to each of those moments or not—she chose to stand up for herself at that moment, probably not thinking that she’d be charged with murder but in the more likely probably that she may die at the hands of the transmisogynist racists who thought it a good idea to fuck with her and her crew.
“Piracy’s preserving effect, while little known, is actually nothing new. Through the centuries, the tablets, scrolls, and books that people copied most often and distributed most widely survived to the present. Libraries everywhere would be devoid of Homer, Beowulf, and even The Bible without unauthorized duplication.”—Provocative read on why history needs software piracy. Reminiscent of the story of how the widely pirated first edition of Arabian Nightsmade it one of the most influential pieces of storytelling in history. (via curiositycounts)
“The only way to master love is to practice love. You don’t need to justify your love, you don’t need to explain your love; you just need to practice your love. Practice creates the master.”—Don Miguel Ruiz (via muxersita)
Almonds—are high in fiber, calcium, magnesium, and useable protein that helps stabilize blood sugar and remove impurities from the bowels.
Avocados—lower cholesterol and dilate blood vessels while blocking artery-destroying toxicity. Avocados contain a nutrient called glutathione, which blocks at least 30 different carcinogens while helping the liver detoxify synthetic chemicals. Researchers at the University of Michigan found that elderly people who had high levels of glutathione were healthier and less likely to suffer from arthritis.
Beets—contain a unique mixture of natural plant chemicals (phytochemicals) and minerals that make them superb fighters of infection, blood purifiers, and liver cleansers. They also help boost the body’s cellular intake of oxygen, making beets excellent overall body cleansers. Aphrodite, according to legend, ate beets to retain her beauty. She was definitely on to a good thing since beets, in addition to all the benefits listed above, also help stabilize the blood’s acid-alkaline balance (pH), which in turn supports healthy detoxification.
Blueberries—contain natural aspirin that helps lessen the tissue-damaging effects of chronic inflammation, while lessening pain. Blueberries also act as antibiotics by blocking bacteria in the urinary tract, thereby helping to prevent infections. They have antiviral properties and are loaded with super-detoxifying phytonutrients called proanthocyanidins.
Cabbage—contains numerous anti-cancer and antioxidant compounds and helps the liver break down excess hormones. Cabbage also cleanses the digestive tract and soothes the stomach, which could in part be due to its antibacterial and antiviral properties. Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage (kale is another excellent choice—see below) demonstrate powerful detoxification activity, including neutralizing some of the damaging compounds found in cigarette smoke (and second-hand smoke). They also contain a compound that helps the liver produce adequate amounts of enzymes for detoxification.
Cranberries—have powerful antibiotic and antiviral substances to help the body cleanse harmful bacteria and viruses from the urinary tract.
Flaxseeds and Flaxseed Oil— are loaded with essential fatty acids, particularly the omega-3s. They are essential for many cleansing functions and maintaining a healthy immune system. They are also critical to maintaining a healthy brain. The health of every cell in your body is dependent on getting adequate amounts of essential fatty acids.
Garlic—helps cleanse harmful bacteria, intestinal parasites, and viruses from the body, especially from the blood and intestines. It also helps cleanse buildup from the arteries and lowers blood pressure. Garlic has anti-cancer and antioxidant properties that help detoxify the body of harmful substances. It also helps cleanse the respiratory tract by expelling mucous buildup in the lungs and sinuses. I am referring to fresh garlic, not garlic powder, which has virtually none of the above properties.
Kale—contains powerful anti-cancer and antioxidant compounds that help cleanse the body of harmful substances. It is also high in fiber, which helps cleanse the intestinal tract. Like cabbage, kale helps neutralize compounds found in cigarette smoke and contains a substance that jump-starts the liver’s production of cleansing enzymes.
Legumes—are loaded with fiber that helps lower cholesterol, cleanse the intestines, and regulate blood sugar levels. Legumes also help protect the body against cancer.
Lemons— are superb liver detoxifiers. In addition, they contain high amounts of vitamin C, a vitamin needed by the body to make a substance called glutathione. Glutathione helps ensure that phase 2 liver detoxification keeps pace with phase 1, thereby reducing the likelihood of negative effects from environmental chemicals. Vitamin C and other antioxidants found in lemons are integral to ward off cancer, fight the effects of pollution and cell damage. Fresh lemon juice contains more than 20 anti-cancer compounds and helps balance the body’s pH levels.
Seaweed—could be the most underrated vegetable in the Western world. Studies at McGill University in Montreal showed that seaweeds bind to radioactive waste in the body so it can be removed. Radioactive waste can find its way into the body through some medical tests or through food that has been grown where water or soil is contaminated. Seaweed also binds to heavy metals to help eliminate them from the body. In addition, it is a powerhouse of minerals and trace miner
Many people with schizophrenia have been the great creative geniuses of their time. Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton and Mendel are a few thought to have been schizophrenic. It has been theorized that these people have a highly developed consciousness and heightened sensitivity to vibrations or astral energies. Most modern societies have little regard for those sensitive enough to be in contact with more subtle energies or dimensions, particularly if their behaviour is ‘different’. Human worth is usually measured by achievements, wealth and intellect. There are strong societal pressures to conform, support the status quo and not ‘rock the boat’.
If it is true that a person with schizophrenia is able to access an advanced consciousness, is there anything to distinguish them from the truly evolved beings in the yogic traditions? Both are able to experience detachment from their bodies, both can have visions of mandalas and yantras and enter a blissful state. The difference is that the person with schizophrenia can change in a moment to a state of dullness and depression. Their actions are actually reactions and the ability to witness and integrate is not present. A person truly in the disembodied state, or videha mukti, has worked out his karmas and transcended his desires. This is the final state before death and merging with the cosmic consciousness. A person with schizophrenia may indeed have an advanced mind, but also has to cope with much confusion and conflict.
“Yoga grounds you in the body. People with schizophrenia often have trouble distinguishing themselves from what’s outside of them. The breath work in particular deepens and stabilizes the connection to the body. When a person with schizophrenia becomes more grounded, they become more aware of what is internal and what is external, and their social skills and ability to function are greatly enhanced. In fact, yoga has this benefit for everyone.”—
Let’s finish up the first month of the New Year, and our focused work with
the mint family, by making an herbal smoking mix. Any dried mint-family plants you have on hand can be used make a great healing smoke, especially if mixed with some mullein, and perhaps a few other herbs. Smoking can be good for the health of your lungs and your being.
Careful application of hot smoke and burning herbs, near the body (smudges), on the body (moxibustion), and through inhalation (smoking) are healing techniques that have been used for thousands of years in myriad cultures around the world. If you choose not to smoke these herbs, you may still wish to try them out as smudges.
Herbal Smoking Mix Number One: Combine one large handful cut and
sifted commercial mullein leaf and one to three teaspoonfuls of any mint-family plant. Mix well and smoke in a pipe or roll in paper. A relaxing smoke that is good for the lungs.
Bergamot (Monarda varieties): rich in oregano oil, an powerful lung antiseptic
Catnip (Nepeta cataria): roll your own catnip cigarettes to relieve menstrual cramps fast fast fast.
Horehound (Marrubium vulgare): bitter taste, powerful effect on the lungs.
Hyssop (Hyssopus off.): powerful penetrating healer of lung tissues.
Lemon balm (Melissa off.): liberally added to mixes to help fight viral infections.
Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca): alters perception when smoked.
Oregano, rosemary, thyme, and sage: antioxidant, anti-infection; aromatic tastes; deep healing
Oswego tea (Monarda didyma): minty taste; harvest late summer when in flower.
Pennyroyal (Hedeoma pulegioides): just a pinch lifts the mood and brings a smile.
Peppermint (Mentha piperata): nice taste; nice to the lungs.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus off.) : as smoke or smudge, improves memory, wards off dementia, counters asthma, and pleases the fairies.
Medicine people and post-menopausal women are the ones most likely to smoke. Fire activates the spirit of the plants and this may prove overpowering for young or untrained people. Each Medicine person makes their own smoking mix, imbued with the spirits of the plants that are their allies.
Herbal Smoking Mix Number Two: Combine one handful each finely chopped uva ursi leaves, cornsilk, and mullein, plus one to two tablespoons of powdered or ground thyme or sage. This is a fair substitute for those wanting to smoke less tobacco; it is more bracing than relaxing.
Fire use sets humans apart. We alone have fire, the dangerous friend, as an ally. Burning herbs is a shamanic action. Inhaling the smoke from burning herbs confers both physical and spiritual healing. The smoke directly affects the lung tissues, opening them and relieving spasms. And smoke carries prayers.
Herbal Smoking Mix Number Three: Combine one handful each finely cut coltsfoot, mullein, motherwort, nettle, hops, and cronewort. Smoke at the dark and the full of the moon to increase your visionary powers.
Some plants have spirits so strong that smoking them alters our perceptions.Happy High Herbs, A Guide to Natural Highs and Addiction Solutions, by Roy Thorpe of Australia, includes these common psychoactive smoking herbs: scotch bloom flowers, California poppy, Mexican poppy, damiana, hops, wild lettuce, lion’s tail, madagascar periwinkle, motherwort, mugwort, nettle!!, passionflower, and Salvia divinorum. Some of these plants are poisonous internally.
Please treat all plants, especially these, with respect and care when you make use of them.
Next week – more adventures with herbal smoking mixes.

I’ve been quiet for a while, but I’m still here. If you haven’t noticed Iran is in the crosshairs. The mainstream media reports on it daily with increasingly aggressive language regarding intervention and possible war. A war with Iran would involve Israel and Europe and would likely force Russia and China’s hand. North Korea, well, consider them the crazy cousin…who knows what they’ll do.
This blog is my environmental scan. I watch for signs, trends, things that appear and stay for while. Right now aggression toward Iran is trending. Iran is a wild-card, but I don’t buy the WMD bullshit easily after the line Bush fed us with regard to Iraq. Fear is a strong motivator.
That being said, we’re already in a Cold War with Iran.
Iran is facing an extensive and growing international campaign aimed at destabilizing its regime.
The web of pressure includes not only the openly acknowledged moves, such as sanctions, but also mysterious incidents that include assassinations, explosions, and computerized sabotage, according to analysts who follow the country closely.
While the overt actions are spearheaded largely by the United States and allies, and quickly encompass more and more countries across the globe, just who is behind the covert activities and why remains a mystery.
In some cases, Iran blames Israel. Israel generally does not comment on such speculation.
“The average pigeon receives more than one hundred pieces of bread from humans per year, despite the fact that they can fly to where the food is. To those of us forced to stay on the ground, this is an act of near-total laziness.
